ÖNORM C 4005 & ÖNORM C 4006 published as national supplement to European solid biomass standards

 ÖNORM C 4005 “Wood chips and hog fuel for energetic use in heating appliances with a thermal output over 500 kW – Requirements and test methods – National supplement to ÖNORM EN 14961-1 and ÖNORM EN 15234-1”

- Facilitates the declaration of wood chip quality for “forest chips” through reduction of quality classes and a suggestion of typical values for A, F, N and Cl for certain raw material groups

- Only raw material of the class “1.1 forest, plantation and other virgin wood” according to EN 14961-1 is within the scope of this standard

 ÖNORM C 4006 “Wood briquettes for non-industrial use – Requirements and test methods – National supplement to ÖNORM EN 14961-3 and ÖNORM EN 15234-3”

- Provides a certification system for wood briquette quality including an external inspection at the production site, sampling and tests of the briquette quality

- Only wood briquettes of the quality class A1 according to EN 14961-3 can be certified

International standards will supersede current European standards for solid biofuels

ISO/TC 238 is currently preparing almost 60 standards for solid biofuels. ISO/TC 238 and CEN/TC 335 have decided to apply Vienna agreement, which means that European standards will supersede by new ISO standards. Other nations will make their national decisions. Fuel specification standards listed below are under Draft international standard (DIS) phase.

• ISO/DIS 17225-1 Solid biofuels -- Fuel specifications and classes -- Part 1: General requirements
• ISO/DIS 17225-2 Solid biofuels -- Fuel specifications and classes -- Part 2: Graded wood pellets
• ISO/DIS 17225-3 Solid biofuels -- Fuel specifications and classes -- Part 3: Graded wood briquettes
• ISO/DIS 17225-4 Solid biofuels -- Fuel specifications and classes -- Part 4: Graded wood chips
• ISO/DIS 17225-5 Solid biofuels -- Fuel specifications and classes -- Part 5: Graded firewood
• ISO/DIS 17225-6 Solid biofuels -- Fuel specifications and classes -- Part 6: Graded non-woody pellets
• ISO/DIS 17225-7 Solid biofuels -- Fuel specifications and classes -- Part 7: Graded non-woody briquettes

Above standards (parts 1-6) will supersede EN 14961 parts 1-6 after publication.

Both CEN and ISO national standardisation bodies are balloting for these standards by end of February 2013. Remember that all comments have to be sent to your National Standardization Bodies, who will put them into balloting portal. These ballots are official ISO/CEN ballots, so only official comments from countries will be taken care of. Comments are discussed in middle March 2013 in Bangkok ISO meeting. After that Final draft standard will be prepared by Finnish secretariat and standards are probably published in early 2014 in Europe as EN ISO standards.
